a note from the artist

Welcome!
My name is Megan and I am a tattoo artist and wedding + lifestyle photographer based out of Oregon. I'm the founder + primary artist here at Atelier Citrus.

I am so glad you found your way to my little corner of the internet. I hope you feel welcome and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

I am so grateful for this career and happy to help you incorporate a little bit of art into your life.

Generally, my point of view as an artist (and human) is rooted in the ups and downs of reality. It might not be a popular opinion, but I think messiness is beautiful and I don't shy away from the hard stuff. Girl, your weird is safe with me.

I also passionately believe in beauty. I believe it can change moods, stop fights, and turn a bad day into a good one. True beauty stops us in our tracks. Slows us down. Makes us think. I try to cultivate that in everything I work on.

Truly, I really love people. I see my work with you as a partnership and would like you to be as involved in the process as you want to be. If you have an idea for tattoo or photography, let's talk and create something together. I'm looking forward to chatting.

Sincerely,

Why the name citrus?

Art History lesson incoming!

Believe it or not, art and citrus have been in a relationship for a long time. Whether it is the fruit's mysterious origins, vibrant colors, or lemons just having their moment, citrus has consistently popped in and out of art history since Roman times.

Probably most notoriously, citrus (specifically the lemon) was a frequent flyer in Dutch still life painting in the 17th century. Some historians hazard a guess that approximately 51% of all oil paintings at that time feature our favorite tart fruit.

What was the fascination though? Well, citrus fruit was considered an exotic luxury. Having a bowl of the stuff on your table was a symbol of opulence, sensuality, and prosperity. Interestingly though, citrus fruit was also fairly common and accessible through the invention of orangeries (fancy word for greenhouse) which even made it available to the less wealthy.

Nice, Megan. But what has this got to do with your business?

Good point.

Taking a cue from our favorite Dutch painters, citrus will be our mascot. Those oblong, knobby spheres will remind us that the work we do together is in pursuit of a gratifying, amusing life. One that is lively, bright, and rich. It will be our cue that life can be full of sensuality, luxury, and opulence even in the most mundane circumstances.

So I don't know, maybe consider picking up a few citrus fruits on your next grocery run? As it sits on your counter, remember that it is a symbol of the pleasurable parts of life; like feeling a sweet, tangy slice of orange burst on your tongue.

aimless love

poem:

"This is the best kind of love, I thought...
No lust, no slam of the door -
the love of the miniature orange tree,
the clean white shirt, the hot evening shower,
the highway that cuts across Florida."
